歷史背景
1815年6月18日，在惠靈頓公爵和瓦爾斯塔特親王（格布哈德·勒貝雷希特·馮·布呂歇爾）的指揮下，滑鐵盧不僅見證了拿破崙的敗北和其統治的終結，也標誌著他百日王朝流亡歸來的終結。惠靈頓曾說，這場衝突是「你一生中見過最接近的勝負」。
當時屬於荷蘭聯合王國的戰場，距離滑鐵盧鎮約2公里（1.2英里），距布魯塞爾南方約15公里（9.3英里）。今天，戰場遺址由獅子山紀念碑標示。由於建造該大型紀念碑時取用了原戰場的土壤，原始戰場遺址未能保存。
